From what I've read, primates were until recently permitted pets in the UK & Europe. Many endangered animals were brought to the UK as there was quite a market - one only has to read Gerald Durrell's books to realise how much was taken for zoos and pets before breeding programmes were set up. Now of course, if anyone has something such as a marmoset they need to get a permit which are being increasingly hard to obtain.
