Yeah. People were far more cavalier with animals in days gone by.
A friend of my step-father kept a monkey, a large (6' or so,) snake and a buzzard. Also I remember sea-side photographers having monkeys and parrots to tempt the visitors with. The monkeys were often dressed up.
In the late 70's (I think) there were a few high profile cases of dangerous pets escaping, panthers, lions etc. and legislation was brought in to regulate the keeping of such things. Also the environmental movement was growing. So now owning exotic pets is a whole different game.
