Ho, hum. Like several Irish-American accounts, this sets out to say that Childers was "an Englishman" rather than "an Irishman" because he was that most uncomfortable thing for Irish-Americans, a Protestant Irishman who supported and fought for Home Rule and Independence.

The Wikipedia article is better.

However, for an alternative, and more amusing, view of the gun running business, written by another Irish yachtsman (rather a more notable yachtsman!) who also served in the RN in the 14-18 War and who also ran guns into Howth, see Conor O'Brien's "From Three Yachts" (since this is an Arthur Ransome forum, the Mariner's Library edition will do nicely!)
