Re AR's reaction to the TELEVISED version of SA,
Hugh Brogan in his "Life of AR" under the time-line
1962-3 refers to the proposal to blow up some of the
rocks in the Peel Island harbour, to the ugliness of
the child-actors, the "common"ness of their CF, the
fact that the script was a travesty of the book, that
their rural characters spoke Cockney, that Cockney
villains were introduced etc. He concludes that "Genia
missed no opportunity of telling him he was a fool ever
to have consented to the project".
Perhaps it is as well he was not around to witness any
further attempts to 'dramatise' any other of his tales.
