From time to time people persist in believing that they are in disagreement when in fact they agree except for issues of colour and movement. I think that is the position we have reached here.
My suggestion is that we all recognise that by behaving as though there is a controversy, we each give oxygen to the belief that there is one. In practice this just means that if there is a thread which you do not enjoy, but which Ian decides does not offend the Guidelines, ignore it. The last thing you should do is challenge the "validity" of the thread - that just makes those who have contributed to it defensive and will make the thread go on longer (and usually in a more acrimonious way). The less you post on a thread, the less likely it is that it will continue, so it will be out of your life sooner.
If you really feel you have to be controversial and say that you don't think a particular thread is anything better than a waste of time, write it out in another program and re-read it in the morning.
