This is one of my favorite questions - what is Really Real? It has been the subject of many of my Art Works for the past forty years.

What is "Really Real" that which is physically there OR that which is perceived? Mr. Ransome certainly creates people, places and situations which, even though they are not actually pysically "Real" become "Real", as if they existed in our pysical world, but only in our minds. A good story, a great piece of music (Herr Mozart is playing at the moment), a painting or sculpture transports us to other places - relieves the tension and humdrum of physical "Reality" (I go to the Nelson Gallery in Kansas City and sit and am calmed by Mark Rothko and Ad Reinhardt). This is why we NEED art - visual, written and audible. It is not "escapism", but an extension of our own "Reality" which allows our imaginations to explore and discover. Mr. Einstein once said: "Imagination is more important than knowledge."

This is probably a fairly "philosophical" question (and I almost did not pass Philosophy class, sorry, Mr. Russell) - but one we face all the time. How many times do we "read" others' actions and words into something that is not there, but seems to have "real" substance to us. I see this happening on this forum many times. I think this is right "on topic" as this is the basis for all fantastical stories, including (especially including) Mr. Ransome's tales!

PS -- Happy Birthday, Ed, and Many, Many More!!!! (Again, age is only a chronological measurement, one's REAL age is subjective and dependent on how much one excercises one's mental resources!
