Back to Prue's original question - my clearest memory is as an 11 year old crewing on a 22' yacht on Lake Macquarie (just south of Newcastle-upon-Hunter) when a southerly storm descended on us. It was just like the description of Teasel on Oulton Broad in CC, lightning and broken water jars and all. I was too busy to be terrified. But the feeling of being alive, helping to use the conditions that seemed determined to sink us so that we could get into safety, remains. When we reached shelter, it took the better part of half an hour for anyone to say anything more than "wow".
