The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers runs a variety of working holidays doing practical conservation work. They run a number of Woodland Management holidays, particularly during the autumn, and these often include the opportunity to learn traditional woodland activities such as charcoal burning (and yes, it is done in a large metal container).
