That famous opening telegram surely sets the tone and establishes from the very beginning John (and Susan's, really) fear of being duffers. As I think we have commented before on Tarboard, there is a natural fear among most sailors not to screw up, but the Swallows' fear of being labeled a Duffer is a near-fanatical thing.
