I quite agree, Andrew. There's no evidence that any of the Walker children were forced to do anything. This is what happens when you go too far outside the text. Susan evidently adopted the 'responsibility' because she wanted to - it was her way of coping with life and expressing herself, and good for her! We don't slam Nancy for being irresponsible (which she sometimes was) - why slam Susan for being responsible? The beauty of AR's stories is that all these different types of child worked in concert with each other. If a reader finds any character irritating, then I suggest that that reader has not quite got into the spirit of the books.
