My reading of 'Susan on the train' tends to agree with Alan's. Susan has appointed herself in charge of all of these things.

I also feel that some of Susan's seasickness and general 'falling apart' in the early stages of WDMTGTS are due to the fact that she doesn't have control. "We promised not to" doesn't work against the tide and the weather. She, quite admirably, is able to pull herself together and participate, but for at least a while, Susan is as emotional as Titty was when she burnt up the Great-Aunt's effigy.
