There were quite a lot of things to be done on such a railway journey.

Whilst children in ones and twos could be despatched, as the D's are in CC and as Roger and Titty are in PP, with small suitcases only, a family group of seven, including a baby, travelling for a three weeks holiday would have had heavy luggage. The now wholly extinct task of "Finding a Porter" (involving the despatch of an adult to the far side of the station at least) would have to be undertaken at each station where a change of trains was needed, in addition to listening out for platform announcements, feeding four children at station buffets, arranging visits to the respective Public Conveniences (vital, if some of the trains were, as they probably were, "non-corridor"!) and perhaps a visit to the WH Smith's bookstall, corralling the younger members, including curbing enthusiasm for train spotting (remember Dorothea at Norwich, when Dick gets out to watch the engine run round the train and get coupled up - no boy is to be relied on when an interesting steam engine is in view!) and collecting minor items of luggage.

On the whole, with Nurse occupied with Vicky/Bridget, Mother organising tickets and porters and so on, there would have been plenty for Susan to "take charge of" and I should think her services were very welcome.
