The Japaneseness of Ransome's pictures

It may well be that this has been done to death ere now.

Reading the books recently, I have been struck by how very "Japanese" Ransome's drawings are. The picture of the Lighthouse Tree in SA is a good example, and the boat under the oak tree in SD is another, but there are many. His composition, perspective and use of blank space are all very "Japanese", to me.

I think that the opinion, once held by me, that his drawings are charmingly naif, is quite simply wrong - they are highly polished productions!
