There would have been plenty of time for Dick to get back to his compartment after the fresh engine was coupled on.

Always assuming he didn't find something else scientific to examine! Average speed of porters? Types of birds nesting in railway stations? Species of moss growing under the platform? I'm sure he'd have found something.
