Tonight's edition of the British TV programme Newsnight had a rather weird item about the current state of French culture and the French economy. It was prompted by the tenth anniversary of the so-called "second judgment of Paris", in which Californian wines were found superior to French ones in a blind tasting. This was a terrible blow to French national pride and self-confidence which those of us who are not French can barely imagine.

Why on earth am I talking about this here? The item contained some comments by the English wine merchant who arranged the tasting ten years ago. His name was Steven Spurrier.

He is, I think, only the second person I have ever heard of named Spurrier, and the first was also Steven - the man who drew the maps in S&A. It seems possible one is a descendant of the other.

So I googled for "Spurrier", and the top two items were for an American footballer called Steve Spurrier.
