Good points, all. To nerds like me (and to young scientists like Dick no doubt), the Walschaerts valve gear is poetry in motion. To see if you agree, have a look at this animated diagram (if it works):

Walschaerts was a Belgian mechanical engineer and invented this gear in 1844.
