Although I tend to be on the side of animals, in this case, much as I like hedgehogs, I agree totally with Andrew.
NZ has suffered badly with introduced pests beginning with kiore, (maori rats) because of its isolation. Having never had any indigenous mammals apart from a tiny bat, you can imagine the devastation on ground nesting birds here from rats, stoats, ferrets and cats, and with the introduction of opossums(some smart alec decided this was the ideal place for the fur trade) our native bush has also been decimated.
It's such a pity animals themselves suffer the consequences for human's thoughtless mistakes.
