You say the Beckfoot launch could not possibly be a Steam Launch. How come? During the period the book is set Steam marine engines were falling out of favour and being replaced with either diesel or electric.

The actual launch, the Beckfoot launch in the book, really was, was called "Daffodil". The WSM has the details on file, infact the secretary of the Museum sent me a picture of a similar craft. It was a steam launch before being converted. It was used to take the family on picnics and for general domestic duties such as shopping and picking up laundry.
