On Saturday, I spotted a hardbound copy of SA on a second hand bookstall at a model steam fair at Merstham.
I thought I would look through it to determine the edition. I was surprised
to find the end papers in black and white to an unfamiliar design.
Further investigation revealed that this was a Book Club Associates edition
printed in 1977. The end paper and the Wild Cat Island maps were drawn by
Juliet Renny, who is a reasonably well known book illustrator and painter.
The end paper maps are rather strange as they include the North Pole, Cache
Island, The Tarn and the Beckfoot Flagstaff but no Charcoal Burners. Those
who had not read WH might be bemused.
I personally prefer these maps to Spurrier's slightly fanciful designs.
A couple of questions :-
Where there any other BCA editions of the series?
Why where the maps changed – copyright difficulties with Steven Spurrier?
Or if these questions have been answered elsewhere, could someone please point me in the right direction.
Many thanks
