Cracking good posting! Thank you!

I started with a copy of "Swallows and Amazons" which my father bought for me in Nairobi, the nearest centre of "civilisation" (we were living in Mogadishu) as a birthday present in 1959. (I was just seven, so I identified with Roger!) I therefore grew up with the Steven Spurrier maps in the endpapers, and the original dedication to "the six for whom it was written, in exchange for a pair of slippers". When my elder son was seven I bought him the Cape hardback, but the dedication had gone and the endpaper map had changed.

I liked the Spurrier map in SA but I liked the more prosaic maps in the other books. Hard to say just why, by SA always seems to have a more "poetic" quality to it.
