As a Japanese fan of Ransome, this opinion is very new and interesting. No other Ransome fan around me here has pointed this out, but I understand what Mr Bennet means.

As for me, Ransome's illustrations were not interesting for me as a child, but now I think they are very fine, especially in their anonimity in that the faces are not clearly written, so it is very realistic. Actually what often happens when some of us go for sailing or camping, or skiing, skating, in a Ransome-ish environment, it appears as if we are in the illustration if we are taken photos without showing our faces clearly.
