I missed the reference to Eric Hiscock's wife. I have read some of their books about Wanderer (I think)
but don't believe I want to face the empty ocean.

I do sail a 24' sloop and my daughter (8) enjoys sailing with me. She certainly is more interested
in sailing because of the books. My two younger ones have been exposed to sailing but not to the
books. They are not yet sailing enthusiasts. The west end of Lake Ontario is not particularly interesting
for cruising but when I lived in the UK, my father and I used to cruise from the Isle of Man
to the Hebrides. Sailing in close to islands etc. is more interesting to me than the open sea.

I think the S&A series promoted my interest in sailing, but as my father was involved I
might well have become interested anyway. I also like other nautical literature, particularly
the Nelsonian Navy, starting with Hornblower and progressing to Alexander Kent before
discovering the perfection of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series!
