If you wish to start with some drama, The Long Winter is quite gut-wrenching and to my mind, some of LIW's best writing.
Little House in the Big Woods is the place to start if you are a 'begin at the beginning' person but its clearly written for the younger set.
I came across 'The First Four Years' long after I was familiar with the earlier books and was bitterly disappointed. If Rose did edit it, it explains a lot.
The series is well worth the read though - like Ransome it recalls a place and time long gone yet part of our heritage, English or American notwithstanding.
