Iain, I had a quick look in 'Swallowdale' as it is the book where the Swallows march overland to Beckfoot. In the chapter heading 'Overland to the Amazon' the Swallows reach a large wall overhung by a copper beech tree and as they prepare to cross the road they hear'the quick clumpety clump of horses feet and the rattle of heavy wheels...' which turns out to be three horses pulling logs on wheels with Mary Swainson's woodman sitting on the shafts.
When Roger later crosses the road he narrowly escapes being seen by the occupants of a car.
I'm missing the end of the book though as its a knackered old paperback, so the Amazons on horseback could possibly be there.
