This has engendered a lot of discussion in NZ as our climber Mark Ingalls and his party attempted to help this climber but, rather than take him down as, to quote Ingalls, 'he was dead or as good as', they continued on.
The climber's parents did tell Ingalls he made the right decision but Sir Edmund Hillary disputed this as he felt the climber's life was more important than whether they reached the summit or not.
I suppose it's a decision each has to make at the time.
