Of course AR made changes. It would appear he had reasons for not making his places and people too close to the real thing but some places, people, etc are described too close to reality to be coincidence.
Look at Huyton Hill, TARS members have known for years that the grounds and surrondings match yet the house was changed by AR. That did not stop some of they trying to sail or row up the Pull Beck to emulate the Swallows in SA.
That does not detract from the fact that these were the originals, even if AR did move them around a bit and distort their appearance, as you correctly point out.
