In "Approaching Arthur Ransome" Peter Hunt briefly mentions Aubrey de Selincourt's series.
"Peter dawlish and Aubrey de Selincourt managed to capture some of the sailing ethos but often had
to fall back on conventional children's book materials. Dawlish (a professional sailor)
is the lesser writer, but he clearly shared many of Ransome's feelings. 'Dauntless Takes Recruits',
for example, ends with a recognizable sentiment:'Then leave that stinking engine ...
We need your weight on the halyard.' Aubrey de Selincourt, some of whose books were
illustrated in ransome style by Guy de Selincourt, borrows both the family and Peter Duck,
in the shape of Uncle Bob, called The Bosun. None the less, 'Family Afloat' especially,
has some strongly atmospheric writing and a restrained love of boats and sailing.
