I don't think that Beckfoot faced north,that would be architecturally most unusual as you suggest. Perhaps the maps are not accurate. In PM it does seem that Beckfoot faces north, but in SD and PP it looks as though it faces east. WH shows a sort of angled north east facing building.

My impression is that the river flows across the north side of the property and the main axis of the house lying pretty well north-south with the lawn being to the east of the house withthe study and bedrooms facing across the lawn and the stables and yard on the west side. The kitchen would be at the north end. Another thought, in PM, the trellis is erected against the wall with the Amazon's bedroom. I don't think that anyone,however horticulturally challenged, would build a trellis for roses on a north wall.
