I always imagined the piano to be an upright. At the time I first read PM, I'd probably never seen a grand piano.

As I recall the piano is mentioned (only?) in PM:
When Cook says there is dust on it (??)

'A body could write their name in the dust on the piano.'

When the D’s hear the piano when sailing up the river (Charmain?)
When the D's sail up the river they hear the piano being played competently and conclude it's the GA herself. No tune is mentioned at that point, but somewhere in the book Nancy talks about having to play Chaminade. This is a reference to music by the female composer Cecile Chaminade (1857-1944).
