Obviously the kitchen range would be lit all day but this would seem to indicate that Beckfoot was cold.

It doesn't indicate anything of the sort. The range would be used for cooking, as in many Lake District farms to this day. And for that matter in posher houses like Beckfoot, except that today it would be an Aga.
