Lyn:

the English and Australian r in words like beer are very soft. I have trouble being understood ordering a beer in the USA. now I say Shiner Bock and that usually gets me something cold and brown. My wife commetns on this all the time, simply saying - they don't understand you.

The r is there, you just have to know what sound represents the r sound. Try saying beer but drop of the real r and just round the e.

My US wife says it sounds like biahr.
