Thanks Joy and Ed - excellent responses in the true tradition of important Tarboard research. We have some way to go, but the 'underneaths' are a major step forward in Ransome scholarship. Soon an interim Paper can be produced.

I can reveal some results from today's work. Both Stephen Spurrier and Clifford Webb drew Susan and Titty with separate skirts (shortish) and tops (usually a collared shirt or blouse) in the 1930s style. Spurrier indicated pleated skirts. On 'Watch Tower Rock' Webb drew Titty standing on a rock shelf handing up the telescope to Roger, so he copped out of showing her climbing, as did Ransome. I have to say that I think AR's clothing for S and T is more practical and wholesome, even if slightly bizarre. I wonder if Evgenia gave advice on this aspect?
