In Swallows and Amazons, at the point where the Swallows visit the charcoal burners, Old Billy asks if they want to see inside the tent.
In my Cape edition, he adds:
"Folk generally what do".
In the 1972 film he says:
"Folk generally want to".
Is the text in the book an example of dialect, or a misprint inadvertently passed by a proof reader?
(Cf "gleams of vanished spirits" in early editions of Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" - what Conrad, describing Thames barges, wrote was "gleams of varnished sprits").
