A note in The Annotated Hobbit says that Tolkien's publisher Allen & Unwin sent the book to Ransome soon after publication. From both Tolkien's Letters and Signalling From Mars, we know about their exchange regarding some references in The Hobbit, changes that were finally made in the second edition in 1951.
What has me curious is the source of the information that it was the publisher that sent the book to Ransome, not Ransome looking for entertaining reading while he was recovering in the nursing home.
Can anyone shed further light on this reference, or refer me to a source I've overlooked?
