A little research on their part would lead them to find that American English in some ways is the more correct or authentic.

In my humble opinion there is no correct or incorrect, authentic or unauthentic use of language. Once a word is spoken it passes into history and, if repeated often enough in speech or in writing, is recorded in a history book called a Dictionary, which, like a street map, is out of date the moment it is printed, or, one could argue, the moment somebody begins the task of compiling it.
