Fear cannot be 'knocked' out of anyone and phobias are not generally seen as silly nowdays except by those who subscribe to the stiff upper lip theory (in itself a danger, looking at the contemporary experiences of military).
Susan's 'motherliness' was encouraged by parental expectation - mentioned more than once in the lake books. Where did anyone say her behviour should have been 'knocked' out of her rather than simply expecting less responsibility from quite a young girl?
