I think this came from a radio comedy during the (don't mention the) war, or shortly afterwards. Bananas were not on the menu, as it was only basic food and supplies coming by ship to the British Isles(someone kept sinking them), and it took a while for bananas to come through. The routine went something like this.
"Where do you put the 'f' in bananas?"
Reply:"There is no f'in bananas"
"I know there's no f'in bananas"
and so on.
Well, we laughed then (I was ony about 6 or 7)
Anecdote: when they eventually came through, my sister was given a banana at school. She saved a bit for our mum in her handkerchief. Just imagine the state it was in when she got home!
