Jenny - sorting the trivia is what we're for. I have long been puzzled by Susan's tea-making arrangements, and on a hot day, a drink of tea is far from trivial. She had a kettle - that we know because it was famously rescued from the sunken Swallow, but (I am working from memory) no teapot. I cannot recall a teapot ever being mentioned in any of the camps and it would probably have been regarded as superfluous. The tea leaves would have been put into the kettle, when it boiled. That is what I have always done out-of-doors.

Milk in first or not? Jenny - that question has split households in Britain. My own family were nearly torn apart by it. My father (and I after him) insisted on the tea being poured first, so that he could check its strength, and also make sure not too much milk went in - it inevitably does when the milk is poured in first. My mother insisted that the milk went in first - 'it tastes better'. Take your pick.

Now for the Biggie. I regret to say that I reckon Susan was a 'milk in first' type. This would mean that she could put the milk in everyone's mugs and then put the milk can tidily away, rather than having to hand it round with risk of spilling. Susan would now exactly how much milk each person liked.

This all ought to be checked, and if Ed was not in the middle of moving from one State to another, I would ask him to make appropriate searches, but maybe when he's settled in . . .

I do realise that this is pretty controversial stuff, and I now anticipate a Tarboard-style 'How Dare You!!'. . .
