Schools have been discussed a few times before. A popular theory is that Dick was at Shrewsbury, well-located for changing at Crewe. I don't think the Callums would have sent Dorothea to a day school if Dick was at a boarding school. More likely she was at a boarding school nearer London.
In fact, there's a huge area of the south of England from which her most convenient route to the Lake District would have been via London. I'd say she probably spent a night at home before joining the train that Dick joined at Crewe.
