John - apologies, I was not accurate about crucible clay - the Beckfoot crucible is more likely to have been made from low-fired refractory clay. Dick refers to the 'little earthen lid'. The clay may have had quartz mixed or 'peppered' in it, to give increased resistance to heat. I understand that modern crucibles are made of a graphite composition, but at this point I give way to your knowledge . . . :-)
