I think we've gone down the wrong branch line! Whatever Jim Turner may have been up to in South America, in the Lakes he was looking for copper, not gold. Unlike Dick, he would not have been trying to smelt the ore, just carry out some qualitative and quantative analysis. A nest of ordinary clay crucibles would suffice.
