The GA and the telephone

Further to one of my queries yesterday: last night's reading session included the point where the recently-arrived GA (in P & M) telephones for the doctor. So she has no phobia about the instrument: why, then, did she not call Beckfoot in the first place? Surely they had long-distance calling back then (before my time)?
