In fact, I have based my assumption on what may be a totally faulty memory of the visual picture I *did* have while reading PM. That picture had the D's virtually underground, in a little cave-like structure delved into the earth, with no walls just room enough to crouch in.

I would guess that the brief discussion within the book of what the "real" Picts supposedly did was the suggestion for this idea. But I generally have an excellent memory for details, especially textual information that has been illustrated. Had I seen the pictures of AR's Dog's Home, I believe they would have dispelled that impression. I would have had a clear idea of what he'd intended, rather than attempting to visualize it from my imagination.

Sorry, I have no real answer for you. I first read PM 15 years ago as an interlibrary loan, so I have no way of tracing what version it could have been.
