Further in relation to Dave's points, in Australia even into the 1980's telegrams were used to convey that the message was really important - it had to get through urgently to the correct person and receipt had to be acknowledged. In 1983, I received an offer of employment from a major firm of solicitors in Sydney by telegram ( I didn't accept that offer - I chose the offer sent by courier!!).
