Was Kanchenjunga the usual spelling back then? Is there any evidence of that?

It appears to me on reading all of the Literature available on the web that:

1. Kanchenjunga was indeed a common spelling and still is a common variant in English.
2. For some reason the British Political Officer in Sikkim, one Col Weir, became interested in the question in the late 1920's or early 1930's. I have no idea why, but Col Weir's name pops up in other things in the Indian literature (assuming it is the Same Guy) and he is considered an interfering nosy busybody by those teachers he managed to upset at the time.

3. CW talks to the King of Sikkim, and my guess is the British PO would talk to the King a lot as there is a Treaty between the two groups, about the name and some form of agreement is reached on Kangchenjunga. CW, as he did with a few other things I found, then probably wrote and started spreading the variant Kangchenjunga as the official spelling.

So it appears that even in the 1920's and 30's there is disagreement on the spelling. CW appears to have tried to resolve the matter as the BPO of the area. To the point that modern mountaineers still use Kangchenjunga.

From the Indian Gov website: Twelve generations of Chogyals ruled over Sikkim for over 300 years. This tiny Himalayan kingdom however witnessed tumultuous change in 1972-73. In 1975 the institution of the Chogyal was abolished and on May 16th, 1975 Sikkim was formally inducted as the 22nd state of India.
