Hello, TARS,

I was pleased to discover such a lively bulletin board and have been lurking for a couple of weeks. I finally sent my membership dues off to Dave Thewlis and feel that I can now legitimately poke my nose in.

It's been a good many years since I first discovered Arthur Ransome's books in a second-hand book store in Vancouver, British Columbia. Over a number of holiday trips from Seattle I was able to find all of his children's book in hardcover, although none in dust jackets.

I've been interesting in the discussion of Katherine Hull and Pamela Whitlock since I picked up a copy of THE FAR DISTANT OXUS in Dulverton, down in the middle of Exmooor, on our last trip there. A nice copy but also sans dust jacket. I, too, was unaware of other titles written by these two authors. I was especially excited to find out that they are set on Exmoor, which, I must admit, just barely wins out over the Lake District as my favorite place in England. My wife and I have done a lot of hiking there. Anyone care to discuss Blackmore's LORNA DOONE?

Likewise we've spent a good deal of time in the Lakes and last time there, in 1995, hiked up to Coppermines where AR had hiked as a young man, and then partway up Coniston Old Man before being turned back by approaching dark. Must learn to start earlier. We have also visited the Broads a couple of times but don't know them nearly as well.

I was amused by the discussion of Force, and the rhyme that went with it. Here in Seattle Sunny Jim is synonymous with peanut butter. Sunny Jim is the name of the local company that produces same.

I'm pleased that I have found all of you and hope I don't disgrace myself here.

Cheers,
Frank Denton
