Ain't it the truth? I remember whizzing downhill on my first bicycle when I was 11 or so. My brother had a speedometer on his bike and he told me I was doing all of 40 miles an hour. Now, when I see little kids all trussed up in their bicycle helmets and knee and elbow pads, cautiously making their way with training wheels under the careful eye of Mum and Dad, I feel a pang of sorrow. Of course my mad careening downhill was dangerous. But there was the wind in my hair and the gorgeous feeling of freedom mixed with the thrill of it all. Moreover, I have struggled through a few tight places, chiefly in the moutains of British Columbia, but have never fallen off a mountain or done myself any permanent injury. "Don't do that, dear, you might hurt yourself." "Be careful. It's so dangerous." Agghh! We have become a nation of milksops, afraid of taking a few risks.
