Sorry Joe if my post seemed like a put-down, that was never the intention.
Like many who post here AR's books are something we grew up with, they are an important part of our childhoods. For many of us they have an importance that perhaps others wouldn't understand, and for me it was the freedom the characters seemed to have. Even as a child I realised that things could never be exactly as AR depicted them, but I made my own attempts but never found anyone who shared my interest at the time - sad as it may seem the characters were my friends too.
What the books mean to each of us, and our view of the characters lives cannot, to me anyway, be recreated; you have to discover them for yourself.
Dear Joe:
There are of course several explanations for everything. And on this board you will find all of them, at one time or another.
Of course I am not calling anyone a half-wit merely an idiomatic concept.
So pull up a chair,
these people grow on you either like WTP or TOTH (another great English character who preferred cars.),
and set (the American for sit down and rest a whiles) a while
you might learn something or you may learn nothing, but at least you will be out of the rain.
As AR said of fishing - only being in the shop is being out of the rain.
I would warn you to watch out for the two Peter's, even I have been know to sink a few tinnies after reading one or two of their posts, and I wasn't drinking for health reasons, I was seeking the calming effect of a good dose of alcohol as it depressed the central nervous system, but everyone needs a reason to sink a tinnie and what better reason than a Limey.
Welcome to the flock, we may not be the Fockers but we are darn close.
