Back in the 1960s my grandmother was an early adopter of seat belts having them specially fitted to her car as she often drove her grandchildren and Girl Guides around. She even put them in the back seat which was unheard of back then. On the other hand my parents only really started using them when they became compulsory.

We forget that a lot of these safety devices were brought in because people died. People still drown every week falling off boats without life jackets, falling off bicycles and landing on their heads. It may seem like a nanny attitude but would you rather wear safety equipment than be mourning the loss of a loved one or have them mourning your loss?
