I think that you may have something there, Alan. I had always thought of her as simply the personification of all the stuffy, pompous attitudes which must have surrounded AR during his youth, and which he clearly despised. The overwhelming theme throughout all of his children's books is freedom of thought and action, of learning by doing. The degree to which this philosophy influences the stories show how deeply it was ingrained in AR's psyche.
